A bioeconomic model for determining the optimal response to a new weed incursion in Australian cropping systems AgEcon
Jayasuriya, Rohan T.; Jones, Randall E..
Invasions by non-indigenous plant species pose serious economic threats to Australian agricultural industries. When an invasion is discovered a decision has to be made as to whether to attempt to eradicate it, contain it or do nothing. These decisions should be based on long term benefits and costs. This paper describes a bioeconomic simulation framework with a mathematical model representing weed spread linked to a dynamic programming model to provide a means of determining the economically optimal weed management strategies over time. The modelling framework is used to evaluate case study invasive weed control problems in the Australian grains industry.

Adaptability of lettuce cultivars to planting in no-tillage on straw of Urochloa ruziziensis PAB
Hirata,Andréia Cristina Silva; Hirata,Edson Kiyoharu; Camara,João Augusto Rizzo.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the adaptability of different lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cultivars grown in no-tillage on straw of ruzi grass (Urochloa ruziziensis), as well as its effects on soil temperature and weed control, in successive cultivations in the summer. The treatments were carried out in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates, in a split-plot arrangement (2x4), in which soil management (no-tillage on ruzi grass and convention tillage) was the main plot, and the different crisphead lettuce cultivars (Amanda, Solaris, Vanda, and Vera), the subplots. No difference was observed between cultivars for soil management. No-tillage reduced the soil temperature by up to 3.7°C and weed density by 3.7 times, in...

Adoption of Best Management Practices to Control Weed Resistance By Cotton, Corn, and Soybean Growers AgEcon
Frisvold, George B.; Hurley, Terrance M.; Mitchell, Paul D..
This study examined adoption of ten best management practices (BMPs) to control weed resistance to herbicides. Using data from a survey of 1,205 U.S. cotton, corn, and soybean growers, count data models were estimated to explain the total number of practices frequently adopted. Ordered probit regressions were used to explain the frequency of individual BMP adoption. Growers practicing a greater number of BMPs frequently (a) had more education, but less farming experience; (b) grew cotton, (c) expected higher yields relative to the county average; and (d) farmed in counties with a lower coefficient of variation (CV) for yield of their primary crop. Yield expectations and variability were significant predictors of the frequency of adoption of individual...

Motamedi,Marzieh; Karimmojeni,Hassan; G. Sini,Fatemeh.
Abstract Background: Allelopathic plants like safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) can be considered as natural herbicides for weeds management in field. But there is not enough research on safflower genotypes allelopathy potential. Objective: So in this study, allelopathic effect of the four safflower genotypes on weeds (Amaranthussp., Hordeum spontaneum), crops (Sesamum indicum, Triticum aestivum) and on autotoxicity of Carthamus tinctorius was evaluated in bioassay using sandwich method. The results can be used in the management of weeds in safflower fields and also in the rotation with other crops. Methods: Two genotypes with high allelopathic potential and two genotypes with low allelopathic potential were selected from forty genotypes of safflower....

Tanveer,Asif; Kamran Jabbar,Muhammad; Kahliq,Abdul; Matloob,Amar; Nadeem Abbas,Rana; Mansoor Javaid,Muhammad.
Identification of weed species with allelopathic potential and characterization of their adverse effects against associated crops is required for better understanding of weed-crop interactions. Phytotoxic activity of Euphorbia dracunculoides Lam. on germination and seedling growth of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was investigated under controlled conditions. Two separate studies were done with each of four organic solvent fractions (n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, 1-butanol) and crude aqueous (1:10 and 1:20) whole plant fractions of E. dracunculoides using distilled water and 0.05% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as control. Different aqueous and organic fractions of E. dracunculoides had a significant bearing on...

Allelopathic effects of orange (Citrus sinensis L.) peel essential oil Acta Botanica
Ribeiro,Jose Pedro Nepomuceno; Lima,Maria Inês Salgueiro.
Crop weeds are the main problem in agriculture, causing a worldwide annual loss of about US$95 billion. The principal method for control is the use of synthetic herbicides. The continued use of these products increases crop costs, reduces crop quality, and leaves toxic residues in the environment, which are a threat to human and livestock health. Therefore, there is a demand for environmentally friendly methods of weed control. The use of allelopathic compounds from crop residues is an alternative. Orange is one of the biggest crops in the world, and its cultivation generates large amounts of residues. There is strong evidence of bioactivity in orange peel essential oil. Therefore, the objective in this work was to verify the allelopathic proprieties of...

Allelopathic Potential of Lavender’s Extract and Coumarin Applied as Pre-Plant Incorporated Into Soil Under Agronomic Conditions Planta Daninha
NAZEMI,A.H.; ASADI,G.A.; GHORBANI,R..
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to further explore that if coumarin and lavender’s extract, similar to greenhouse conditions, are phytotoxic towards some plant species under agronomic conditions. Before planting of maize, coumarin at 0, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 g h-1 and lavender’s aqueous extract at 0, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, 8,000, and 16,000 mL h-1 were applied and incorporated into soil at a 3-5 cm depth. The density and biomass of weeds was significantly reduced by applying both compounds. The inhibition ability was also rate-dependent. Although the density and biomass of maize was also decreased at high rates, this crop showed higher tolerant to both compounds that all weeds.

Allelopathic testing of Pedicularis kansuensis (Scrophulariaceae) on seed germination and seedling growth of two native grasses in the Tibetan plateau Phyton
Shang,ZH; Xu,SG.
Abstract. Pedicularis kansuensis is a dominating poisonous weed, and it might have allelopathic effects on other native grasses in alpine meadows. An experiment was conducted to examine a range of concentrations of aqueous whole plant extracts (25, 12.5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.25 and 0.0 g/L) of P. kansuensis, prepared at the flowering stage on seed germination and seedling growth of two native grasses (Poa pratensis and Elymus nutans). High concentrations of aqueous extracts of P. kansuensis inhibited seed germination and seedling growth of P. pratensis (p< 0.05). Most aqueous extracts of P. kansuensis had a stimulatory (p< 0.05) effect on E. nutans. Our results suggest that the allelopathic ecology of P. kansuensis on other native grasses needs further...
